Pete brought a grinder, scales and a special coffee pot on their camping trip.
While he weighed beans and adjusted the stove, Barry handed him a hot coffee.
Pete said it tasted excellent.
Then he noticed his own coffee pot was still empty.
He asked Barry how the drink had been made….
Pete told Barry that proper coffee would make their camping trip feel less basic.
Barry said a dry sleeping bag would do that too.
Pete packed a hand grinder, a small set of scales, a thermometer and a special pot.
Barry packed two mugs.
On their first morning, Pete laid everything on a towel.
The beans needed weighing.
The water needed heating.
The grinder needed adjusting because yesterday’s setting had been for a different pot.
Barry asked whether the towel needed anything.
Only people not standing on it.
He moved his boot.
Pete weighed the beans twice. The table leaned, so he moved the scales to the cool box.
The cool box had a curved lid.
He moved them to a plate on the ground.
Barry put a kettle on the other burner.
Pete said the water shouldn’t be boiling when it reached the coffee.
Barry said his water would try to behave.
The grinder made a noise like gravel in a tin.
Pete stopped to adjust it.
Then he changed the size of the pieces.
Then he wrote the new setting in a little notebook.
Barry handed him a mug.
Pete took a sip.
He looked surprised.
That’s good.
Glad you like it.
Very smooth. What temperature?
Hot.
Pete tried it again.
Did you use the same beans?
Barry said he hadn’t.
Where did you get yours?
The village shop.
Pete looked towards his own equipment.
The special pot was empty. The beans were still beside the grinder.
What did you make this in?
The mug.
Barry held up a jar of instant coffee.
Pete stared at it.
You’ve let me spend half an hour setting all this up.
You looked happy.
Pete said the jar could have replaced most of his bag.
Barry agreed.
Then why didn’t you tell me to leave the equipment at home?
Barry settled back in his chair and looked at the quiet campsite.
Because last time you brought your guitar.
