The Wrong Garden Prize

At the village garden show, Ruth entered her enormous pumpkin. The judges measured it, weighed it and pinned a ribbon to its stem.

“Third prize,” the chairman announced.

Ruth stared at the other entries. They were all tiny pots of herbs.

“What won first?” she asked.

“Mrs Bell’s basil.”

“In the giant vegetable category?”

The chairman turned the entry card around. It said MOST IMPROVED GARDENER.

“Last year Mrs Bell grew nothing,” he explained.

Ruth looked at her pumpkin. “And last year?”

“You grew one even bigger.”
