Elaine bought an umbrella that connected to the weather app.
Each morning it lit up when rain was expected.
On Tuesday it flashed even though the sky was clear.
Elaine checked the message and read, Take me anyway. You lose everything….
She laughed and left it by the door. At lunch, clouds appeared and rain soaked her on the walk back from the cafe.
The next morning the umbrella flashed again. The forecast promised sunshine all day.
Elaine carried it to work to prove the device was wrong.
At five, the handle vibrated and displayed, Do not leave me under your desk like the blue one.
Elaine looked under the desk. Her old blue umbrella was there. So were two scarves and a lunch box she had reported missing.
She took both umbrellas home. On the bus, the new one beeped before her stop. The message said, Pick me up before standing.
Elaine told the driver her umbrella was becoming rude.
The driver said it sounded experienced.
At home she opened the settings and turned off weather alerts. The umbrella still flashed.
She asked what it was warning her about now.
The screen showed tomorrow’s forecast.
Zero percent rain. One hundred percent chance you leave me on the bus.
