The Theatre Ticket Found a Better Seat

1. The Theatre Ticket

At the theatre, Max showed the usher a ticket for seat 18. Someone was already sitting there. The usher checked both tickets.

Max’s ticket was for the evening performance; he had arrived at the matinee. He started to leave, but the usher found an unsold seat near the front.

“You can watch now,” she said, “or return tonight.”

Max took the seat. After the show, he called his sister, who had bought the tickets.

“Wasn’t it at eight?” she asked.

“It still is,” Max said. “I just saw the rehearsal for my opinion.”

2. The Magic Trick

At a children’s party, the magician made a coin disappear. One boy watched her empty hands, then pointed to her sleeve.

“It’s in there.”

She pulled up her sleeve. No coin. He checked the table, the hat and his own pocket.

Finally the magician revealed the coin behind his ear. He looked delighted and annoyed at once.

“I checked my pocket,” he said. “Why didn’t I check my ear?”

She handed him the coin and taught him a simple trick with his fingers. For the rest of the party, he kept checking behind other people’s ears.

3. The Karaoke List

The karaoke host asked guests to write their names beside a song. Elise wrote “Maybe Later” in the song column while she decided.

Half an hour later, the host called her name and announced a song called Maybe Later. The screen displayed a track she had never heard.

“I wasn’t ready,” she said.

“The song is,” replied the host.

Her friends sang the chorus with her. By the end she was laughing more than singing.

She filled out a second request slip with an actual song title and wrote NOW in large letters beneath it.

4. The Puzzle Box

Sam and his aunt started a thousand-piece puzzle. The picture on the box showed a lighthouse at sunset. After an hour, they had completed only the sky.

Sam turned the box around to read the instructions. “There are none.”

“The picture is the instruction,” his aunt said.

They worked on the lighthouse next. A missing corner piece turned up beneath the box at the end of the evening.

Sam put it in place and said, “Maybe the box wanted to help.”

“It waited until we’d done the difficult part,” his aunt replied.

5. The Concert Programme

At the concert, the programme listed a surprise encore. Lina read the line and showed her friend.

“How can it be a surprise if it’s printed here?”

“It doesn’t say what they’ll play.”

After the final song, the audience clapped. The musicians returned and played the opening tune again, this time with a different arrangement.

Lina recognized it halfway through.

“That was a surprise,” she said.

Her friend pointed to the programme. “It promised an encore, not an unfamiliar song.”

Lina folded the paper. “Next time, I’m reading it after the concert.”
