1. The School Bell
On the first day of term, the school bell rang during lunch. Everyone hurried toward their classrooms except the caretaker, who stayed by the dining hall.
“Why aren’t you moving?” a student asked.
“I know who rang it.”
The new office assistant appeared, holding a sheet of bell times from last year. Lunch was now fifteen minutes longer.
The head teacher made an announcement telling everyone to return to their food. A few students cheered; one had already finished.
“Can I have another lunch?” he asked.
“You can have the fifteen minutes,” she said. “What you do with them is up to the canteen.”
2. The Pencil Sharpener
Mina borrowed a pencil sharpener from her classmate and kept sharpening until the pencil was half its original length.
“It keeps breaking,” she explained.
Her classmate examined the sharpener. A tiny piece of lead was stuck inside the blade. He removed it, and the next turn made a perfect point.
Mina looked at her short pencil. “Now it works.”
“You’ve had enough practice.”
At the end of class, she returned his sharpener and offered him a new pencil from her bag.
“Why didn’t you use that?”
“I didn’t want to waste it,” she said.
3. The Homework Folder
The teacher asked students to put finished homework in a blue folder. Noah did his assignment and put the blue folder inside his backpack.
The next morning, he handed the teacher an empty desk tray. She asked where his work was.
“In the folder, like you said.”
He retrieved it from his bag. The teacher pointed to the classroom folder beside her desk.
“That blue folder.”
Noah looked at his own, almost the same shade. “Can we label them?”
She agreed. The next day his folder said MINE, and the class folder said PLEASE PUT THE HOMEWORK HERE.
4. The Class Election
In the class election, candidates promised extra games and shorter homework. Sofia promised to remind everyone when library books were due.
She won by one vote. Her friends were surprised.
“People really care about library books?”
“They care about the fines,” she said.
On her first day, she wrote the due date on the board. Then she checked her own bag and discovered her book was overdue.
The librarian gave her a small fine. Sofia paid it and added a line below the date: THIS INCLUDES THE CLASS REPRESENTATIVE.
She won the next election by a larger margin.
5. The Art Display
The art teacher placed a sign beside the class paintings: PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH. One parent leaned in so close that his glasses tapped the glass frame.
His daughter pulled him back. “You touched it.”
“Only with my glasses.”
“They’re yours,” she said. “They count.”
He stood farther away and admired her painting of their kitchen. In it, a man wearing glasses reached toward a cake.
“Is that me?”
“Yes. I painted it before today.”
He smiled. “So this is a pattern.”
“That’s what Mum said.”
