At the museum, a guard reminded a father and his daughter not to touch the exhibits. The girl kept her hands neatly behind her back through the dinosaur hall, the pottery room, and an entire display of shiny old coins.
At the exit they passed the gift shop. The girl watched her father reach for his wallet.
‘Are you allowed to touch that?’ she asked.
‘Of course,’ he said. ‘It’s my wallet.’
She looked at the shelf of toy dinosaurs. ‘That’s strange,’ she said. ‘It was the only thing in the museum I was trying to protect.’
