The library installed a self-service scanner. Mrs Patel placed her book beneath it. The machine beeped, and a green light flashed.
She took the book home. The next morning an email said she had not borrowed anything.
She returned to the desk with the book and showed the librarian a photo of the green light.
“I saw it scan,” she said.
The librarian looked at the photograph. “That is the printer beside the scanner.”
Mrs Patel frowned. “Why did it beep?”
“Low paper,” the librarian said. “It has been asking for help all week.”
