Mina returned a book through the library’s night slot. The next morning, her phone showed a message: THANK YOU FOR YOUR DONATION.
She went to the desk. “I borrowed that book. I’m returning it.”
The librarian checked the computer. “It says you placed it in the donations slot.”
“There were two slots?”
“One says RETURNS. The other says DONATIONS.”
Mina pictured the dark hallway. “The second sign had a light over it.”
“Yes,” said the librarian. “That’s because people returning books know where they’re going. People donating usually need encouragement.”
She turned the screen around. “Would you like to borrow your donation?”
