The Honesty Box

At her roadside stall, June put out a basket of apples and a box marked Pay What You Owe. By lunchtime all the apples were gone. Inside the box were coins and a note: ‘I owe you one apple.’

The next morning there was another note: ‘I owe you two.’

June asked the neighbour who had been visiting the stall. ‘Why do you keep leaving notes instead of paying?’

‘I’m keeping track,’ he said. ‘You told us to be honest.’

‘And when will you settle up?’

‘When my tree has apples,’ he replied. ‘If you’re in a hurry, I can pay you in pears.’
