Ruth set six alarms so she would not miss the early airport taxi.
At midnight, the first alarm rang and said, Start worrying now.
At one, another said, Check the passports again.
Her husband sat up and asked, When does the alarm for sleeping go off?….
Ruth said preparation was the secret to a calm journey.
At two, an alarm told them to confirm the taxi. The driver replied that he was asleep but still booked.
At three, an alarm said to weigh the cases. Ruth moved two shirts from one case to the other and gained no useful result.
At four, an alarm said to check the weather. Her husband looked outside and said it was dark.
At four thirty, the phone told them to eat breakfast. Neither wanted food, but Ruth made toast because the schedule required it.
At five, they stood by the front door wearing coats and the expressions of people who had already crossed three time zones.
Then the final alarm sounded. Ruth smiled and said this was the important one.
The message read, Relax. Flight delayed until noon.
Ruth sat down with her suitcase.
Her husband climbed back into bed.
He said, Excellent. We reached the first stop early.
Ruth asked what stop.
Exhaustion.
