The Help Desk Call Reached a Plant Shop

1. The Wrong Extension

Iris dialed the office help desk and reached the plant shop downstairs. She apologized and explained that her computer had frozen.

The shop owner suggested turning it off and on, then admitted he was only guessing.

Iris tried it. The computer restarted. She called back to thank him and ordered a small fern.

When she collected it, the owner said he would tell the building manager about the crossed extensions. “Please do,” Iris said. “Otherwise your plant business may become technical support.”

He pointed to the fern. “Apparently it already is.”

2. The Reminder Call

Dad called Leo to remind him about dinner at seven. Leo said he had already set an alarm.

At six, the alarm rang. It read CALL DAD ABOUT DINNER. Leo called.

“I’m ready,” Dad said. “Why are you calling?”

“Because the alarm told me to,” Leo replied.

They realized each had created a reminder for the other person’s reminder. They laughed and agreed to meet at seven. At six-thirty, Dad sent a text saying, “This is not a reminder. I am leaving now.” Leo appreciated the distinction, though he still checked his alarm.

3. The Voice Message

A woman left her brother a long voicemail describing the route to her new apartment. He called back and said he had found it already.

“How?” she asked.

“You sent the address in a text before you called.”

She checked her messages and found the address. “Then why did you listen to the voicemail?”

“I was on the bus,” he said. “Your story about the bakery on the corner made the trip interesting.”

When he arrived, he brought pastries from that bakery. Her unnecessary directions had finally become useful.

4. The Hold Music

A customer waited on hold while a recorded voice thanked him for his patience every thirty seconds. He began answering it aloud.

“You’re welcome,” he said each time.

When an agent finally picked up, she heard him mid-sentence and asked whom he was talking to.

“The recording,” he said. “We’ve become quite close.”

She laughed, solved his issue quickly, and offered to send a confirmation email. He asked her to thank the recording on his behalf. She said she would pass on the message, although it might take a while to get through.

5. The Signal Spot

Mina found that her phone worked only beside one upstairs window. Whenever someone called, she hurried to that spot.

Her friend rang while Mina was downstairs carrying laundry. She reached the window out of breath.

“Why are you whispering?” the friend asked.

“Because I’m standing next to a sleeping cat.”

The signal improved after a network repair, but Mina kept visiting the window. The cat had learned that phone calls meant company. Mina told her friend that connectivity had become a household ritual, with an audience of one.
