The Garden Sign Stopped the Wrong Visitor

1. The Garden Sign

Mrs Patel put a sign beside her new flowers: PLEASE DON’T STEP ON THE BED. The next morning, a neat line of footprints ran around the edge.

Her neighbour’s little boy had taken the instruction seriously. He had walked on the narrow soil border to avoid the planted centre.

“I didn’t step on the bed,” he said. “I went around it.”

Mrs Patel showed him where the flowerbed began. Together they placed small stones along the outside edge.

The next day he followed the stones and brought her a note: I USED THE PATH THIS TIME.

She put the note on the fridge.

2. The Picnic Blanket

At the park, Eli spread a picnic blanket under a tree. His friend warned that the shade would move as the afternoon passed.

“Then we’ll move the blanket,” Eli said.

They ate lunch. An hour later, the sunlight reached the sandwiches, so they shifted everything a metre. Another hour later they moved again.

By the end, they were back near their first spot on the other side of the trunk.

“We’ve walked around the tree without leaving the picnic,” his friend said.

“Excellent,” Eli replied. “Exercise and lunch, carefully separated.”

3. The Seed Packet

The seed packet said plant in a sunny spot. Hana placed the packet on the sunniest windowsill while she prepared the soil.

Her brother found it there two days later. “Are you waiting for the seeds to grow through the envelope?”

“I forgot them,” she said.

They planted the seeds together. Hana put the empty packet on the fridge with the planting date written across it.

Weeks later, the first shoots appeared. Her brother pointed to the packet.

“It worked better after we took them out.”

“That,” Hana said, “was the most important instruction they didn’t print.”

4. The Bird Table

Peter built a bird table and filled it with seed. For days no birds came, although they sat on the fence nearby.

He moved the table away from the busy path. The next morning, three sparrows arrived.

“They wanted privacy,” he told his wife.

She pointed to the cat sleeping beside the old location. Peter looked at the table, then at the cat.

“Perhaps they wanted a safer restaurant.”

He moved the cat’s cushion indoors. The sparrows stayed longer, and the cat watched them through the window with the expression of a disappointed customer.

5. The Rain Barrel

Luis installed a rain barrel under the gutter. The forecast promised heavy rain, and he congratulated himself on the timing.

The storm came overnight. In the morning, the barrel was nearly empty. He checked the lid and found a hose leading from the overflow outlet straight into a flowerbed.

The flowers looked delighted. The barrel did not.

His daughter said, “You watered the garden while you slept.”

“I meant to store the water.”

“You stored it in the flowers,” she said.

Luis adjusted the hose and decided to count the first storm as a trial run.
