Farmer Ruth advertised free-range eggs from the little stall outside her gate. One morning the stall was empty, but she found three notes from neighbours thanking her for the eggs on their doorsteps.
‘What deliveries?’ she asked her husband.
They followed a trail of feathers down the lane. The hens were wandering through open garden gates and laying wherever they found a quiet corner.
‘We need to get them back behind the fence,’ her husband said.
‘In a minute,’ Ruth replied. She was reading another note.
‘What does it say?’
‘It says we should charge extra for home delivery.’
