At the village fair, Bill volunteered for the lost-and-found table. He sorted three umbrellas, one tiny boot and a pair of sunglasses that belonged to a man wearing them on his head.
At noon Bill’s wife called. ‘We’re setting out chairs for the family supper. When are you coming to help?’
‘As soon as someone takes over here,’ Bill said.
An hour later she came to the fair. The lost-and-found table was empty except for a card Bill had pinned to his own shirt:
FOUND: ONE HUSBAND. PLEASE COLLECT AFTER FIVE.
‘Very funny,’ she said. ‘Whose idea was this?’
‘Mine,’ Bill said. ‘It’s the only shift here where the owner hasn’t come to claim me.’
