Cal came home from the supermarket with one loaf of bread and a receipt longer than his arm.
‘I saved forty pounds today,’ he announced.
His wife looked in the bag. ‘On a loaf of bread?’
‘No. I walked past the coffee machine that was on sale for twenty pounds, the fancy pan for fifteen, and the biscuits for five. That’s forty pounds I didn’t spend.’
She nodded. ‘By that rule, I saved us two hundred pounds.’
‘How?’
‘I didn’t buy the coat I wanted. Now hand over your forty and we can call it a deposit.’
