The Bakery’s Honest Sign

The bakery put a chalkboard outside: FRESH BUNS UNTIL TEN.

At five past ten, Arthur asked for two. The assistant checked the clock and handed him a bag.

“But your sign says fresh buns until ten.”

“It does,” she said. “We took them out at nine.”

Arthur opened the bag. The buns were still warm. “So what are they now?”

“Experienced buns,” she said. “They’ve survived their first five minutes in the world.”

Arthur looked at the price. “Are they cheaper?”

“No. Experience costs extra.”
