Nora asked the hotel desk for a quiet room and no early alarms.
The clerk promised both and moved her away from the lift.
At six, someone knocked softly on her door.
Nora opened it and found the night manager holding a small card.
Nora had spent all day traveling and wanted one thing from the hotel.
Silence.
The clerk offered a room near the lift. Nora asked whether the lift was quiet.
The clerk said it was, except when people used it.
Nora chose a room at the far end of the corridor.
She also checked the clock beside the bed. The alarm light was off.
No wake-up call, she told the clerk. No phone, no buzzer and no cheerful person saying good morning before the sun has decided.
The clerk made a note.
Nora slept perfectly until six in the morning, when she heard a gentle knock.
She ignored it.
The knock came again, even softer.
Nora opened the door. The night manager stood there holding a small card.
He did not speak. He smiled and handed her the card.
It read: YOUR REQUESTED WAKE-UP CALL HAS BEEN CANCELLED.
Nora stared at him.
I did not request one.
The manager nodded and pointed to the bottom of the card.
A second line said: WE THOUGHT YOU WOULD WANT TO KNOW EARLY.
