Nina Requests Another Interview Before Signing

Nina did well at her job interview. The manager praised the friendly team, the great hours and the chance to move up.

He offered her the job.

Before signing, Nina asked if she could sit in on an exit interview.

The manager asked why she wanted to meet someone who was leaving….

Nina had learned to ask questions at job interviews.

At her last one, she had asked whether the office was busy. The answer had been a cheerful yes. Nobody had mentioned that most of the work would land on her desk at five minutes to five.

This time, the manager did most of the talking.

They were like a family, he said.

Nina asked whether that meant they ate together or borrowed money from each other.

He laughed and moved on to the friendly team.

There were excellent chances to move up.

Nina asked who had last been promoted. The manager gave her three names. Two had left. He couldn’t remember what had happened to the third.

Still, the pay was better. The office was near her home. She wanted it to work.

She met a man at the coffee machine and asked how he liked the place.

He glanced through the glass at the manager, gave two thumbs up and hurried away without his coffee.

Back in the meeting room, the manager put the contract in front of her.

Nina said she had one final request. She wanted to sit in on an exit interview.

He blinked.

That was unusual. Most applicants wanted to meet someone who had just joined.

Nina said she had heard plenty from people who wanted to keep their jobs.

Was she hoping to learn what the next job might be? the manager asked.

No. I’d like a reference from someone who’s allowed to be honest.
