Mavis returned a flat-pack chair because one part was missing.
The assistant opened the box and counted every screw, leg and bracket.
Nothing seemed absent.
Then Mavis showed him the instruction page she had circled….
She had spent Saturday placing the pieces across her living-room floor.
The manual showed cheerful hands joining parts A through H. Mavis had parts A through H and three spare screws that made her suspicious.
She built the seat backward, corrected it and attached one leg where an arm should be.
After two hours, the chair stood up but refused to face the same direction as its cushion.
At the store, the assistant checked the box twice.
All the parts are here, he said.
Mavis opened the manual and pointed to the final picture.
It showed a smiling man relaxing in the finished chair.
The assistant asked what was missing.
Mavis tapped the picture.
The smiling man who knows what he is doing.
