Helen booked cinema seats and chose a screening with subtitles.
Her husband said they did not need them because the film was in English.
Ten minutes after it began, he leaned over and asked what the actor had said.
Helen pointed to the words and smiled….
David disliked subtitles. He said they distracted him from the acting.
Helen said his questions distracted everyone from the film.
At the cinema, David promised not to ask anything.
The film began with a detective whispering in the rain.
David leaned over.
What did he say?
Helen pointed to the sentence at the bottom of the screen.
Two minutes later, an actor spoke through a telephone.
David whispered again.
Who is she calling?
Helen pointed to the next subtitle.
By the third question, a man in front turned around.
David apologized.
I do not know why they put words on an English film, he said.
Helen smiled.
They are not translating the actors. They are translating the film for husbands.
