A man was driving down a quiet country road when suddenly BAM! — he accidentally ran over a rooster that had wandered into the road.
The man immediately stopped the car, feeling terrible about what had happened. He got out, looked around, and sure enough… there was the poor rooster.
Feeling guilty, he picked it up and walked to the nearby farmhouse. He knocked on the door, and after a moment, a farmer opened it.
The man said politely, “Sir, I’m really sorry. I accidentally ran over your rooster. It ran into the road before I could stop. I feel awful about it.”
The farmer looked down at the rooster in the man’s hands and scratched his head.
The man continued, “I truly apologize. I’d like to make it right. I’d be more than happy to replace him.”
The farmer stood there for a moment with a puzzled look on his face.
Finally he said, “Well… I suppose that’s fair.”
Then he pointed toward the barn and said, “If you really want to go around back and try to take his place with the hens, be my guest…”
The man’s eyes went wide.
The farmer then chuckled and added,
“…but honestly, I’d rather you just pay for a new rooster.”
