Eileen Weighs Her Holiday Handbag

Eileen weighed her suitcase before leaving for the airport.

It was exactly twenty kilograms.

At check-in, the scale showed twenty-three.

Eileen opened the case and began searching for the extra weight….

She removed a book, two pairs of shoes and a hair dryer her husband said the hotel already owned.

The scale still showed twenty-three.

Her husband, George, watched from behind the trolley.

Eileen checked every pocket. She found nothing except socks and a packet of biscuits.

The airline clerk asked whether anyone had added something after she packed.

George looked at the ceiling.

Eileen opened the front pocket and found three heavy guidebooks.

George admitted putting them there because his hand luggage was full.

Eileen stared at him.

Why didn’t you carry them?

George pointed to the suitcase.

I did. I carried the suitcase from the car.
