Dan Brings His Dog to the Meeting

When Dan brought his dog to work, it whined halfway through a meeting. His boss stopped talking and said the dog needed a walk.

The next day, Dan tried the same little whine.

His boss told him to be professional.

Dan asked to see the dog’s contract. His boss asked why….

Dan’s dog needed company while the kitchen floor was being replaced. His boss said he could bring it to the office for a day.

The dog slept through the morning calls. Dan wished he’d been given the same option.

At two, they all went into the weekly meeting. The boss had printed an agenda on both sides of the paper.

Half an hour later, they’d reached the first item.

The dog sat up. It looked at the door, looked at Dan and gave a small whine.

The boss immediately put down his papers.

Poor thing. You can’t expect him to sit here all afternoon. Take him outside.

Dan stood up. Two colleagues offered to help.

The boss said one person could manage a dog.

Outside, Dan walked once around the building. The dog sniffed a hedge, then settled down again.

When they returned, the meeting was still on the first item.

The boss said they could finish on Friday. It wasn’t fair to keep the dog waiting.

On Friday, the floor was finished and the dog stayed home. Dan sat in the same chair.

After half an hour, the boss turned over his agenda.

Dan looked at the door. Then he gave the same small whine.

The boss lowered his glasses.

We’re at work, Dan. Try to behave professionally.

Dan apologised and asked whether he could see the dog’s contract.

The dog hasn’t got a contract, his boss said. Why?

I want his terms.
