Rachel offered ten pounds to whoever found the TV remote. Her home makeover show was about to start.
Their son found it behind a cushion and took it to Dad.
Dad checked the time, glanced at the kitchen wall and reached for his wallet.
Before you give that to Mum, he said, let’s discuss the price….
Rachel loved home makeover shows.
Her husband, Dan, used to enjoy them too. Then he noticed that every episode ended with a new job for him.
After the first one, their hallway needed painting.
After the second, the bathroom needed shelves.
After the third, Rachel stood in the kitchen tapping a wall.
Do you think this has to stay here?
Dan had started reading the TV guide like a weather warning.
On Thursday, Rachel’s favourite show was about to start. The family on it planned to knock two rooms into one.
Rachel had already made tea and found her notebook.
But the remote was missing.
She checked the table, the sofa and the basket where the remote was supposed to live.
Dan watched from his chair.
Have you tried looking in the basket?
Yes.
Behind the basket?
Yes.
Have you tried accepting that some things are gone?
Rachel turned towards their ten-year-old son, Max.
Ten pounds if you find it before eight.
Max got straight to work.
For ten pounds, he could search places that usually required three reminders.
He lifted cushions, checked under the sofa and looked behind Dad’s chair.
There it was.
Max picked it up and quietly showed his father.
Found it.
Dan glanced at the clock. Two minutes to eight.
From the kitchen, Rachel called out that tonight’s builders were removing a wall just like theirs.
Dan looked at their kitchen wall.
Then at Rachel’s notebook.
Then at the remote.
Max held out his hand.
Mum’s paying ten pounds.
I heard.
Dan took out his wallet.
What are you doing? Max asked.
Making a better offer.
Max looked towards the kitchen.
But I’ve already found it.
Dan counted out two notes.
Twenty pounds if you lose it again.
