A New Phone Reminder Solved Nothing

1. The Phone Reminder

Oscar set a reminder on his phone: CHARGE PHONE BEFORE BED. At ten, it appeared while his battery showed two percent.

He dismissed it to find the charger. The phone died before he reached the bedroom.

The next morning, he plugged it in and set a second reminder for nine. At nine, he was outside. The alert said CHARGE PHONE BEFORE BED.

“Helpful?” asked his sister.

“Too early,” he said.

She placed a spare charger beside the sofa. That evening the alert arrived, and for once the solution was within arm’s reach.

“The reminder was fine,” she said. “Its location needed work.”

2. The Voice Assistant

Lena asked her voice assistant to play soft music while she cooked. It played a loud song called Soft Music instead.

She asked it to lower the volume. It replied that it couldn’t find a song called Lower the Volume.

Her son walked in and turned the speaker down by hand. The music became pleasant.

“Why didn’t it understand me?” Lena asked.

“Maybe it was too loud to hear,” he said.

She laughed, then asked the assistant for a timer. It set one without trouble.

“It understands dinner,” she said. “That’s enough for tonight.”

3. The Printer Queue

At the office, Jonas sent a one-page document to the printer. Nothing came out. He clicked print twice more.

The printer woke up and produced three copies. His colleague said the queue had been paused.

Jonas took two copies to the recycling tray. A moment later another sheet appeared with a note printed at the top: PRINTER TEST.

“Who sent that?” he asked.

“I did,” said the colleague. “To see whether it worked.”

Jonas held up his three pages. “I had a test running already.”

“Yes,” she said. “Yours had a larger sample size.”

4. The Video Call

During a family video call, Grandpa kept saying nobody could hear him. Everyone heard him perfectly, but his speaker was muted.

His granddaughter sent him a message: TURN UP YOUR SPEAKER. He nodded at the camera and turned up the television instead.

The football match became loud enough for the whole call to hear through his microphone. His granddaughter phoned him separately and explained the correct button.

“Can you hear us now?”

“Yes,” he said. “And the match.”

He turned the television down. For the first time that afternoon, the family could hear only each other.

5. The Smart Light

Rina installed a smart light in her hallway. She named it Hallway, then told her phone to turn it on.

The kitchen light came on. She checked the settings and discovered she had switched the two bulbs during setup.

She renamed the kitchen bulb Hallway and the hallway bulb Kitchen so the voice commands would work without moving anything.

Her husband tried to turn on the kitchen light. The hallway glowed.

“This system makes sense only to you,” he said.

“It doesn’t make sense to me either,” she admitted, and swapped the bulbs back.
