A man was sitting outside his house, happily playing with a scruffy little stray dog. The dog was wagging its tail like it had just won the lottery, and the man was tossing a stick like he had all the time in the world.
Just then, his wife stepped outside, took one look at the scene, and froze.
“Excuse me,” she said, arms crossed, eyebrows fully loaded. “What exactly are you doing?”
The man smiled proudly. “Making a new friend.”
She stared at the dog. The dog stared back. It scratched itself mid-eye contact.
Her face twisted. “Don’t play with that ugly, disgusting thing!”
The man looked shocked. “Hey! That’s not nice,” he said, gently patting the dog. “He’s not ugly. He just… has character.”
The dog wagged its tail harder, clearly appreciating the PR support.
The wife took a step closer, squinted, and shook her head. “Character? That dog looks like it lost a fight with a vacuum cleaner.”
The man chuckled. “You’re exaggerating. He’s actually kind of cute.”
The dog, feeling encouraged, jumped up and licked the man’s face.
“See?” the husband said. “He likes me.”
The wife sighed, looked at him from head to toe, then delivered the final blow.
“I wasn’t talking to the dog.”
There was a long silence.
The dog slowly sat down.
The husband blinked.
Even the dog looked confused… then quietly scooted a little further away from the man.
