Peter boarded the train and found someone sitting in his reserved seat.
He showed the man his ticket and pointed to seat forty-two.
The man showed Peter an identical ticket for the same seat.
Peter asked, Which one of us is in the wrong carriage?….
They compared train numbers, carriage numbers, and departure cities. Everything matched.
Peter checked the seat label twice. The other man checked the window, as if the correct seat might be outside.
A conductor arrived and studied both tickets.
Peter said the booking system had sold one chair twice. The other man said he had arrived first and therefore owned the armrest.
The conductor asked Peter where he was traveling. Peter named the city.
Then she asked the other man. He named the same city but said he was returning home after tomorrow’s meeting.
The conductor pointed to the date on his ticket.
The man had booked the return train for the following day. He had arrived twenty-four hours early.
He stood up and apologized.
Peter took the seat.
The conductor smiled at the early passenger.
The seat is correct. You are the delay.
