Neil showed the barber a photograph of himself from twenty years ago.
He asked for the same thick hair and sharp style.
The barber studied the picture, then studied Neil’s head.
He asked, Do you want the haircut or the year?….
Neil said he would settle for the haircut.
The barber combed the left side, then the right side, then returned both sides to where they had started.
Neil asked why he kept pausing.
The barber said he was waiting for more material to arrive.
Neil suggested using extra product. The barber said glue could hold hair but could not create staff.
After several careful snips, he turned Neil toward the mirror. The style looked neat, but it did not resemble the old photograph.
Neil complained that the picture had much more volume.
The barber placed the old photo beside the mirror.
He said the haircut was the closest possible match.
Neil asked what had changed.
The barber pointed at the photograph.
The hair stayed the same. The customer moved twenty years away.
