The New Coffee Machine Requires A Meeting

The office replaced its simple coffee machine with a smart one.

It asked for a name, email, password, and preferred foam level.

By the time Colin finished setting up his account, the morning meeting had ended.

His manager asked, Did you bring the coffee?….

Colin said he had reached the security questions. The machine wanted the name of his first mug and the street where he first drank tea.

His manager told him to press the large coffee button.

The screen said the button was available only to verified beverage users.

Colin checked his email. The verification link had expired after sixty seconds.

Three coworkers joined the queue. One forgot her password. Another could not accept the updated milk policy because the screen would not scroll.

The office manager arrived and announced a short training session beside the machine.

Everyone watched him create a cappuccino profile. When he finally pressed Start, the machine installed an update.

At noon, it produced one small cup of hot water and asked for a rating.

Colin gave it five stars.

His manager asked why.

Colin pointed to the empty meeting room. Nobody had attended a meeting all morning. Everyone had been waiting for coffee.

He smiled at the machine.

It is the first office upgrade that actually reduced meetings.
