Graham Enters the Quiet Train Carriage

Graham chose the quiet train carriage so he could read in peace.

A sign banned loud calls, music and unnecessary noise.

The carriage stayed silent until Graham opened a packet of crisps.

Every passenger slowly turned toward him….

Graham approved of quiet rules.

He glared at a man whose headphones leaked music and nodded when the conductor asked someone to end a phone call.

Then lunchtime arrived.

Graham took out a packet of crisps.

The first crack sounded like a branch breaking.

The second sounded louder because everyone was waiting for it.

He tried opening the packet slowly. That produced a long noise like a tent collapsing.

Every passenger looked at him.

Graham whispered that food was not banned.

The woman opposite pointed to the words unnecessary noise.

Graham folded the packet carefully. It crackled again.

He put it back in his bag.

The woman smiled.

Thank you.

Graham opened his book.

His stomach growled across the carriage.

The woman sighed.

Fine, she said. Open the quiet food.
