Arthur forgot his reading glasses at a restaurant, so the waiter lent him a pair.
Arthur studied the menu and ordered the cheapest soup.
His wife asked why he was suddenly so careful with money.
Arthur handed her the glasses and pointed to the prices….
Arthur normally chose dinner by recognizing familiar shapes on the menu.
A short line was soup. A long line with a large number was usually steak. Anything written in a fancy box was too expensive to pronounce.
That evening, the waiter noticed him holding the menu at arm’s length.
He offered a spare pair of reading glasses.
Arthur put them on. The menu became sharp. So did every price.
He changed his order from steak to soup.
His wife, Helen, looked surprised.
You said you were hungry.
I was hungry in soft focus.
She asked why the glasses had made him careful with money.
Arthur handed them over.
Helen read the menu, then looked across the table at Arthur.
She took off the glasses and smiled.
Arthur asked whether the prices looked better without them.
Much better, she said. So do you.
