Dad decided nobody understood the leftovers in the fridge.
He bought labels and wrote the food, date and likely owner on every box.
On Friday, Mum found one box marked DO NOT EAT.
She asked what important food was inside.
Dad had grown tired of opening the fridge and finding mystery containers.
One held two potatoes. One held half a spoon of peas. Another held something that had once made a promise to become soup.
Nobody remembered putting them there.
Dad announced a new system.
Every container would show its contents, the date and the name of the person most likely to eat it.
He bought labels in four colors.
Blue meant lunch. Green meant dinner. Yellow meant useful ingredients. Red meant urgent.
By Tuesday, the fridge looked like a filing cabinet.
CHICKEN, MONDAY, DAD.
RICE, TUESDAY, ANYONE BRAVE.
HALF ONION, STILL CONFIDENT.
Mum admitted it was helpful. Their son stopped opening every box before choosing cereal. Even the dog waited for a label.
On Friday, Mum noticed a large red label on a small box at the back.
DO NOT EAT.
She called Dad into the kitchen.
What important food is in this one?
Dad looked worried.
He lifted the lid carefully. Inside was a piece of cake no larger than a postage stamp.
Mum asked why he had saved it.
Dad said he had not.
Then why label the box?
Dad put the lid back.
That is not a warning, he said. It is the serving instruction.
