Mark filled Dad’s new photo frame with pictures of family milestones. His graduation, wedding and first house all appeared.
Dad asked for one more picture of Mark.
His first day at work? No.
His new car? No.
Mark asked which great day he wanted to remember….
For Dad’s birthday, Mark bought a digital photo frame and loaded it with family pictures.
Dad asked whether it also came in an ordinary version that stayed on one photograph.
Mark said he could choose the pictures himself. He only had to say which moments mattered most.
The graduation appeared first. Mark stood outside the university in a gown.
Dad remembered the day well. He said Mark had looked very confident for someone who’d needed help finding the building.
Next came the wedding. Mark and Lucy were smiling beside a fountain.
Dad said the fountain had been louder than the speeches, which he’d appreciated by the fourth toast.
Then came the first house. Mark stood in the doorway holding a key.
Dad recognised the doorway. He’d spent the following weekend helping him paint it.
Mark asked whether those were the sorts of big family moments Dad wanted in the frame.
They were. But one was missing.
Mark opened the album on his phone.
My first day at work?
No.
The new car?
No.
He found photographs of a holiday, a kitchen and his first successful barbecue.
Dad said he’d enjoyed the barbecue, but it wasn’t the day he meant.
Mark asked whether Lucy might have taken the missing photograph.
Dad said somebody would have wanted to record it.
Tell me the day and I’ll find it, Mark said.
The day you paid me back.
