Ella Knows About the Next Office Vacancy

Ella asked an office receptionist about a job that hadn’t been advertised.

She knew who was leaving and the date of his last day.

The manager came out. Ella also knew about two other staff who’d left that month.

He asked where she was getting all this information….

Ella arrived at the office carrying a folder. She asked whether she could apply for George’s job.

The receptionist said they weren’t advertising any jobs.

Not yet, Ella said. He leaves on Friday.

The receptionist looked towards the manager’s door. George hadn’t told everyone about his new job yet.

She asked Ella to wait.

The manager came out and invited her to sit down.

He asked who had told her George was leaving.

Ella said she didn’t want to get anybody into trouble.

That made the manager sit a little straighter.

She added that she would also have been interested in Anne’s position, but she’d heard about that one too late.

Anne had left three weeks earlier.

The manager asked whether she knew Anne.

Not well. I know she doesn’t like walnuts.

He paused.

Ella said she also knew that Peter from accounts had retired. His last day had been the fourteenth.

The manager closed his door.

Do you have a friend working here?

She said she knew several people by their first names.

Which department?

She wasn’t sure. Usually they just introduced themselves over the phone.

The manager looked at the folder in her lap. He asked whether it contained notes about his staff.

Photographs, mostly.

He leaned back.

Ella said she kept them to show other customers.

Customers?

Yes. George’s was particularly nice.

The manager stopped reaching for his phone.

What exactly do you do?

I make the leaving cakes.
