On the first morning of his holiday, Adam told reception that the hotel Wi-Fi wasn’t working.
The receptionist apologised and offered to move him nearer the router. Adam refused.
She offered him a free connection in the office. He refused that too.
Then she said an engineer was coming after lunch. Adam reached for his wallet….
Adam’s boss had agreed to his holiday on one condition. He should keep an eye on messages.
Adam asked how many eyes that left for the sea.
His boss laughed and sent him a meeting invitation.
On the first morning away, Adam opened his laptop. It showed no connection.
He tried once more, then sat back. Outside, his wife was pointing at two empty sunbeds.
Adam went to reception.
The Wi-Fi wasn’t working in his room, he said.
The receptionist apologised. There had been a fault overnight.
Adam asked whether she could put that in writing. His boss would need to know why he couldn’t join a call.
She gladly wrote a short note on hotel paper.
Adam read it, thanked her and folded it carefully.
She offered a different room, closer to the main router.
Adam said they were settled now. It would be a shame to move the bags.
She offered to send someone to move them.
He said his wife liked the view.
The room opposite had the same view and a stronger connection.
Adam said his wife was very particular about which side of the corridor she admired the sea from.
The receptionist looked at him for a moment.
Then she offered him the office computer. It had a cable connection. He could take his call there free of charge.
Adam said it was kind of her, but he didn’t want to get in the way.
Not at all. The engineer was coming after lunch, and everything should be fixed before his afternoon meeting.
Adam took out his wallet.
She explained that there was no repair charge for guests.
How much to postpone it until Monday?
