Rob Asks for Another Free Gym Introduction

Rob’s gym offered one free session with a trainer to new members. Rob booked six by choosing a different trainer each time.

At his seventh visit, the manager said she had someone special for him.

She led him into an office. Rob looked at the desk and asked what they would be working on….

Rob joined the gym during a free-session offer.

His first trainer showed him how to use the rowing machine. Rob enjoyed the session. He enjoyed the price even more.

The following week he saw a trainer he hadn’t met before. He asked about an introduction.

Had he used the gym before?

Not with you, Rob said.

That session covered the weights.

On his third visit he tried an evening trainer. On the fourth, he arrived on Sunday. By the fifth, he knew which staff had which days off.

His wife asked whether his fitness was improving.

Rob said he had learned six warm-ups and was still paying for none of them.

She asked what happened after the warm-up.

He said the trick was finding someone new before the bill.

For his seventh session, Rob wore a cap. He’d decided it made him look like a serious beginner.

The manager met him at reception and called him by name.

He said she must have a good memory.

She said the six trainers had helped.

Rob asked whether anyone was free that morning.

Yes. She had arranged someone especially for him. A short private session, very little equipment and absolutely no running away from the basics.

Rob followed her past the treadmills.

They went into an office. A man sat behind a desk with six introduction forms spread out in front of him.

Rob said he preferred a session that focused on strength.

The manager said they would begin with something he had been avoiding.

Rob looked at the forms, then at the man.

What are we working on?

Your outstanding balance.
