Derek Asks About a Tattoo for Work

Derek asked a tattoo artist to put his job title on his arm. Then he listed the jobs his boss had added without changing his pay.

The artist said the words wouldn’t fit. He suggested choosing something about work that was less likely to change.

Derek rolled up his sleeve….

Derek went to a tattoo shop after his boss gave him a new title.

He told the artist, Jo, that he wanted something to mark his progress at work.

What’s the title? Jo asked.

Senior customer support and stock control assistant.

Jo wrote it down. She asked how big he wanted the lettering.

Big enough to read.

She looked at his arm. She looked at the words.

Could you shorten it?

Derek said his boss had only just made it longer. Last year he had simply been a shop assistant.

What changed?

He now answered the phone, checked deliveries and locked up.

Jo asked whether that came with more money.

Derek said it came with a new badge.

She suggested using the first letters.

Derek tried saying them aloud. It sounded like a piece of equipment that had stopped working.

His phone rang. It was his boss, asking whether he could start taking the shop’s photographs too.

Derek said he could discuss it on Monday. Then he asked whether photography would go on the badge.

Apparently it would.

Jo crossed out her sketch.

I don’t think your job title is a good choice for something permanent.

Derek agreed.

What part of your work stays the same? she asked.

He took his payslip from his pocket and pointed to a number.

Jo asked whether he really wanted that on his arm. What if it changed next year?

Derek rolled up his sleeve.

It hasn’t in twelve years. You’re safe.
