The Dog Obeyed a Different Command

1. The Dog’s Command

At obedience class, the trainer told Milo to say “stay” once and step away. His dog sat perfectly still while he crossed the room.

Milo was delighted. Then the trainer asked him to call the dog back. Milo said “come,” but the dog stayed put.

“He’s very good at the first instruction,” the trainer observed.

Milo walked over and showed the dog a treat. The dog stood immediately.

“So he understands treats better than words,” Milo said.

The trainer shook her head. “He understands that you usually walk back with the treat. He’s been training you too.”

2. The Cat’s Appointment

The vet asked when Bella’s cat had last eaten. Bella said “about an hour ago.”

The cat, sitting in its carrier, looked at her as if she had committed a serious error.

“He had breakfast,” she explained.

The vet checked his weight and suggested slightly smaller portions. Bella nodded. The cat made a long, theatrical noise from the carrier.

Outside, Bella opened the door to let him see the street. He refused to move.

“You’re not weak from hunger,” she told him.

He remained seated until she lifted the carrier. Then he purred all the way home.

3. The Garden Visitor

Every morning a squirrel took one walnut from Mrs Khan’s bird feeder. She moved the feeder higher. The squirrel still reached it.

She placed a separate walnut on the fence, hoping it would leave the birds’ food alone. The squirrel took the walnut and visited the feeder afterward.

Her neighbour suggested she stop negotiating with it.

“I haven’t negotiated,” she said. “I offered a free sample.”

The next morning, she watched the squirrel carry the fence walnut away. Two birds finally ate in peace. She called it a partial victory and refused to discuss the feeder’s missing second walnut.

4. The Aquarium Tour

At the aquarium, a child asked why the octopus had eight arms. The guide explained how it used them to explore and hold things.

“Can it carry eight shopping bags?”

“Possibly, but it doesn’t go shopping.”

The child looked at the tank. The octopus was unscrewing a container with one arm while holding a rock with another.

“It could help my dad bring groceries inside.”

His dad nodded. “It could also open the cereal before we reached the kitchen.”

The child considered this and said, “Then it stays at the aquarium.”

5. The Parrot’s Compliment

Luca taught his parrot to say “Nice work!” whenever he finished a chore. The bird quickly learned the phrase but had no idea what counted as a chore.

It praised Luca for tying his shoes, opening the fridge and dropping a spoon. He enjoyed the encouragement anyway.

One afternoon he spent an hour cleaning the kitchen. The parrot watched silently. Luca waited, then asked, “Well?”

“Nice work!” it said when he opened the fridge for a drink.

Luca’s sister laughed. “Maybe it thinks getting a reward is the hard part.”
