1. The Indoor Umbrella
Grandma opened an umbrella in the living room. Her grandson reminded her that it was supposed to bring bad luck.
“I’m checking the repair,” she said. “One spoke was bent.”
He stood well back while she turned it. The spoke held, but a shower of dry leaves fell from inside the canopy onto the rug.
Grandma stared at the leaves. She had used the umbrella for a garden walk last week.
“See?” he said. “Bad luck.”
She handed him the dustpan. “No, that’s evidence. The bad luck is that you were here when I found it.”
2. The Family Photograph
Dad set the camera timer and ran to join the family photograph. In every picture, he arrived just after the shutter clicked.
His daughter suggested moving the camera closer. He tried again and reached his spot in time, but everyone was laughing at his sprint.
“We need one serious photo,” he said.
They took another. The dog wandered into the frame, sat perfectly still and looked straight at the lens. Dad was blinking.
His daughter chose that picture for the wall.
“Why this one?” he asked.
“Everyone looks like themselves,” she said. “Even you, trying to organize us.”
3. The Laundry Basket
Mum asked Tariq to carry the clean laundry upstairs. He returned with an empty basket and a proud smile.
“Where are the clothes?”
“Upstairs.”
She followed him. He had placed the whole pile carefully on the landing, directly outside every bedroom.
“I said to put them away.”
“You said carry them upstairs,” he replied.
She handed him three shirts and pointed to his drawer. Ten minutes later, everything was folded.
“Now I understand the whole job,” he said.
“Good,” she replied. “Tomorrow I’m going to ask for the whole dishwasher.”
4. The Houseplant Sitter
While the family was away, Uncle Dan agreed to look after their houseplants. He sent a photo every evening to prove they were thriving.
On the fourth day, his niece noticed the same cloud outside the window in every picture.
“Did you take all these on Monday?” she asked.
Dan admitted he had. He had watered the plants, but forgotten to take fresh photos.
He went back and sent a new one. Every leaf looked fine, except a cactus wearing his reading glasses.
“Why?” she asked.
“So you’ll know this picture is definitely from today.”
5. The Lost Remote
The family searched for the television remote under cushions, behind books and inside the fridge. Nobody admitted putting it there.
Grandpa finally found it in his coat pocket. He had taken it outside while answering the door.
“Why didn’t you notice?” asked his granddaughter.
“I thought it was my phone.”
She held it up. “Did you try calling anyone?”
“Only once. Nothing happened, so I assumed the signal was poor.”
The next evening, he couldn’t find his phone. His granddaughter reached straight into the coat pocket.
There it was, next to the remote.
