1. The Office Plant
Nina’s office plant sat beside the printer. Every week someone watered it, and every week it looked more disappointed.
She moved it to the window. By Monday, the leaves had lifted. A colleague asked if it needed a new pot.
“It needed a new department,” Nina said.
The manager overheard and placed a small card beside it: TRANSFER APPROVED.
For the next month, visitors stopped to admire its progress. Nina found the card useful too. Whenever the printer jammed, she pointed at the plant.
“It complained once,” she said, “and got the best desk in the building.”
2. The Meeting Clock
The team had a wall clock that ran seven minutes fast. Everyone knew, but nobody could agree who should fix it.
During a meeting, the boss said they had ten minutes left. Four people packed their notebooks immediately.
“That’s the clock’s time,” he said.
“Then we have seventeen minutes?” asked Omar.
“No. My watch says ten.”
They all looked at the clock, then his watch, then each other. The boss ended the meeting to settle the argument.
Omar adjusted the clock afterward.
“Why now?” a colleague asked.
“We can’t afford another meeting about it.”
3. The Email Signature
Marta added “Sent from my phone” to her email signature. The next day, a client complimented how quickly she had replied from a train.
She had written the message at her desk. Embarrassed, she changed the signature to “Sent from wherever I am.”
Her colleague read it and asked whether she was travelling again.
“I’m at my desk.”
“Then say that.”
Marta removed the signature altogether. Within an hour, someone asked why her emails suddenly sounded so formal.
She typed a reply, stared at the blank space beneath her name and added, “Still me.”
4. The Spare Key
The shop owner gave his new assistant a spare key. “Keep this safe,” he said.
On Saturday, he arrived to find the assistant waiting outside with the key in a small locked box.
“Where’s the box key?” he asked.
“Inside the shop. I didn’t want to lose it.”
The owner used his own key to open the door. The assistant carried the box inside and unlocked it with the other key.
“See?” he said. “Both keys were safe.”
The owner nodded. “Next week, let’s make one of them useful before opening time.”
5. The Suggestion Box
The café installed a suggestion box near the exit. On the first day, the owner found a note saying, “More chairs.”
He added two chairs. The next day another note said, “Less waiting.” He hired help for the lunch rush.
By Friday, the box contained a note that read, “Keep doing this.”
The owner smiled until he recognized his own daughter’s handwriting. She had written all three notes.
“Were you testing me?” he asked.
“No,” she said. “I couldn’t find you between tables, and the box seemed to work faster.”
