Pete joined a beginner’s running club because the advert promised a gentle circular route.
The leader set off from the car park, passed the bakery, crossed the square, and returned to the same car park in four minutes.
“Is that the whole run?” Pete asked.
“That’s the route,” said the leader. “We do it ten times.”
After two laps Pete was out of breath. On the fourth, he noticed the leader was still standing outside the bakery, waving each time Pete passed.
“How many laps have you done?” Pete asked.
“One,” said the leader, holding another pastry. “It’s a circular route. I let it come to me.”
