Lena’s daughter planned a birthday party for their dog. She made six little invitations and left them on the kitchen table while she fetched envelopes.
When she came back, the cards had vanished. There were only a few paper crumbs beside the dog’s bed.
‘Buster ate all the invitations!’ she cried. ‘How will the other dogs know to come?’
Her father looked at Buster, who was licking the last piece of paper from his nose.
‘Maybe he wanted a quiet birthday,’ Dad said.
Buster looked from the empty table to the cake on the counter.
‘Or,’ Dad added, ‘he read the bit about sharing.’
