The Mechanic’s Test Drive

Laura took her car to a garage because it squeaked around every corner. Her husband was certain the brakes needed replacing. Laura thought it sounded like the suspension. Their daughter said the car was singing.

The mechanic invited all three along on a short test drive. Around the first bend came a loud squeak. Around the second, an even louder one.

Back at the garage, he opened the rear door and reached beneath their daughter’s seat. He pulled out a rubber duck and squeezed it. The exact same noise filled the car.

Laura laughed and asked what she owed.

“Five pounds for finding the duck,” the mechanic said. “And forty for the test drive. Your family argued louder than the car the whole way around.”
